Yoga and Ayurveda Retreat in India
Ayurveda is the oldest form of health care in the world. It is considered the sister science of yoga and is said to have originated in India over 5000 years ago, at approximately the same time as the emergence of yoga. It is called the healing science of India and utilizes the blessings of nature and spirit to restore balance to the body. The very uniqueness of Ayurveda is that it does not fight with the body to control disease, but teaches us to harmonize our body and mind with the universal laws of nature, thereby removing the very roots of disease.
In Sanskrit, Ayur means life and Veda means knowledge or science, so the literal translation is “The Science of Life”. It is based on the one fundamental principle that health is the natural state of an individual as long as his/her body and mind are in harmony with nature (environment). Disease is the outcome of disharmony. Ayurveda is different from other health care systems in that it places emphasis on prevention at the root causes, instead of dealing with symptoms. Ayurveda emphasizes on the importance of food as our medicine, along with yoga, pranayama, meditation, herbal medication, and the cleansing, rejuvenation and detoxification of both body and mind.

Benefits of ayurveda
1)      The Ayurvedic herbs are holistic in approach where they aid in proper absorption and thereby good digestion. The Ayurvedic herbs are considered to be a source of refreshing energy for both the mind and the soul rather than simply the substitute of proteins, vitamins and other essential minerals. They also act as an appetizer.
2)      Ayurveda deals not merely with medical science, but also with the social, ethical, intellectual & spiritual life of man. The main benefit of Ayurvedic medicine is that it s free from causing side effects.

What is Meditation?
The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that you can ever have. When the mind becomes free from agitation, is calm and serene and at peace, meditation happens.
The benefits of meditation are manifold. It is an essential practice for mental hygiene. A calm mind, good concentration, clarity of perception, improvement in communication, blossoming of skills and talents, an unshakeable inner strength, healing, the ability to connect to an inner source of energy, relaxation, rejuvenation, and good luck are all natural results of meditating regularly.
As you go along with your meditation, you will feel the positive effect on your physical and mental health. According to some studies, this is manifested by a generalized reduction in multiple physiological and biochemical markers, such as decreased heart rate, decreased respiration rate, decreased plasma cortisol (the major stress hormone), decreased pulse rate, and increased EEG alpha (brain wave associated with relaxation). During Meditation, one goes through a state of deep relaxation, while the mind’s awareness level is increased. This results in faster reactions, greater creativity and improved comprehension.

What is Pranayama ?
Pranayama  is a Sanskrit word meaning "extension of the prana or breath" or "extension of the life force". The word is composed of two Sanskrit words: prana, life force, or vital energy, (noted particularly as the breath), and ayama, to extend or draw out.  Pranayama is the perfect control of the life-currents through control of breath, and is the process by which we understand the secret of prana and manipulate it. You can hardly make any spiritual progress without the practice of pranayama. One who has grasped this prana has grasped the very core of cosmic life and activity. Through various exercises and training in pranayama the yogi tries to realize in this little body the whole of cosmic life, and attain perfection.

Breath is a physical aspect or external manifestation of prana, the vital force, and thus pranayama begins with the regulation of the breath. Breath, like electricity, is gross prana, while prana itself is subtle. By controlling the breath you can control the prana – just as you can control the other wheels by controlling or stopping the fly wheel of a diesel engine, and just as you can control the hairspring, cog wheels and the main spring of a watch by controlling the minute hand. Control of breath is achieved through manipulation of the lungs and the breathing process.

Benefits of Pranayama :
1)      Pranayama teaches us the proper way to breathe. We have become accustomed to breathing from our chests, using only a fraction ofour lungs, not knowing that this is an unhealthy and unnatural way of inhaling and may lead to complications. With yoga breathing, we increase the capacity of our lungs, bringing more oxygen supply to the body to function well. We learn how to breathe slowly and deeply – the right way.
2)      Pranayama reduces the toxins and body wastes from within our bodies – thereby preventing diseases at their roots.
3)      Pranayama helps digestion. With the proper way of breathing, one’s metabolism and health condition will start to improve and constipation is relieved.
4)      Pranayama develops our concentration and focus of mind. It can counteract the stress and relax the body much deeper than sleeping.
5)      Pranayama leads us on a spiritual journey with a relaxed body and mind.
